So you’ve finally decided to live on your own. While purchasing a property remains to form part of your personal plans, the current economic environment may somehow make it a long shot at the moment. This however should not stop you from testing the waters. As they say, practice makes perfect. While you wait it out, renting a home is a good option to put your dream into action.

Here’s a checklist of the items, in categories, to help you prepare for that long-awaited move-in:

1. Cleaning Supplies

As you move-in to your rented home, your first task would likely be cleaning every corner so grab these items beforehand:

Cleaning wipes and spray
Vacuum
Toilet cleaner
Garbage cans (purchase extra to place in the bathroom and other rooms!)
Trash bags

2.Safety Supplies

Second on your list are securing safety tools and appliances. If you’re renting in a condominium, your rented place would probably have built-in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as fire extinguishers that come with your rented unit. It would be nice to change the current door lock but if your landlord would not allow it, negotiate for a double lock instead to keep your home as safe as possible. In addition, add the following on your checklist:

First-aid kit
Lockbox or a small vault (for documents and valuable items)
Flashlights
Hidden key (in case you lose the original!)

3. Maintenance Supplies

When life and your career or school work get mixed up, you may find a lot of reasons to stay up late at night. If you find yourself in this situation, remind yourself that tomorrow is another day so don’t let yourself get so worked up. It’s always important to prioritize things to do and leave the rest for next time so you don’t miss out on important rest.

Beddings
Bed frame
Nightstands (Get two that match!)
Clothes cabinet or a simple rack with hangers

5.Living Room Essentials

Make your living room feel comfortable and complete with these home items:

Seating (a sofa just enough for the space and a comfortable chair will do the trick!)
Coffee table (adorn with a scented candle and your favorite book)
Window coverings (blinds or curtains, it’s up to you!)
Modem and router (yes, the Wifi is best placed central in the home!)
